Meet Your Legal Advocate, Mr. John M. Selden
Mr. John M. Selden graduated from Long Beach High School in NY at 16 with a Regent’s Scholarship and an advanced placement college credit. He finished his undergraduate degree at Princeton University in 1978 and his law degree at New York Law School in 1981.
He joined the New York State Bar Association in 1982 and New Jersey State Bar Association in 1983 and practiced his profession in these two states for several years (but is now inactive there). In that region, Mr. Selden was accepted to the United States District Court and the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Upon making the move to Florida, he became a member of our State Bar in 1991 and has practiced here ever since.
He joined the New York State Bar Association in 1982 and New Jersey State Bar Association in 1983 and practiced his profession in these two states for several years (but is now inactive there). In that region, Mr. Selden was accepted to the United States District Court and the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Upon making the move to Florida, he became a member of our State Bar in 1991 and has practiced here ever since.
In the early 1990s, Mr. Selden worked as an Assistant Public Defender in the 13th Judicial Circuit. He served as a Felony Lead Trial Attorney and division supervisor. As a legal professional, Selden has regularly conducted jury and non-jury trials of severe criminal cases. He also supervised, trained, and mentored other section attorneys.
While in Tampa, he also served as Chief of the Appeals/Research Division. He wrote more than 30 briefs on appeal, trained and supervised attorneys and paralegals in the research and preparation of memoranda at trial and appellate levels, and presented in-house seminars on appellate practice. Mr. Selden presented extraordinary writs, briefs, and oral arguments before the Florida Supreme Court on a matter certified to be of great public importance. R.J.A. et al. v. Beginning in June of 1999, Mr. Selden joined the local Public Defender's Office for the 7th Judicial Circuit. He has served in various departments, like the High Crimes Division. Selden handled both trial and appellate level 1st and 2nd-degree murder cases, Supreme Court arguments, and training in death penalty matters.
He also worked in the Appellate Division, briefing and arguing matters to the 5th District Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. For many years, he was also in charge of all the trial-level cases in action under the Civil Commitment of Sexually Violent Predators Act in the four Counties of the Circuit. In between his duties, Selden supervised 11 attorneys in two felony, one juvenile, and two misdemeanor court divisions in the DeLand office. - New York Law School - Juris Doctor awarded in June 1981. He studied three semesters of concurrent management courses in a joint J.D. and M.B.A. program at the City University of New York (He didn't finish his business program to gain work experience for a legal clerkship).

Mr. Selden was a sole law practitioner from 1994 to 1998. He pursued a private practice where he handled trust and estate planning matters (limited to living trusts) from 1994 to 1996. Mr. Selden worked as an Editor and Program Manager of the Asbestos Abatement Regulatory Service at the National Asbestos Council, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia. He created a 21-volume encyclopedic collection of all federal, state, and local laws and regulations concerning asbestos and its removal or abatement.
He was tasked to gather, analyze, and summarize legal information for this project. Aside from that, Selden assumed a supervision role in the marketing and sales of the product.

1985 – 1989
Mr. Selden was a Managing Junior Partner at the Law Firm of Willis & Selden in Jersey City, New Jersey. He had a general and criminal law practice with an emphasis on trial litigation in all levels of state and federal courts.
Selden served as trial counsel in over 100 criminal cases and was solely responsible for all office management and administration, including computer operations. He also took on the job of writing and arguing all complex pre-trial motions and numerous appellate briefs. He presented an oral argument before the New Jersey Supreme Court, which changed state law on the point of evidence.

Mr. Selden had an independent general practice in West Orange, New Jersey. While he took cases related to real estate transactions, personal injury, and matrimonial law, he concentrated on criminal defense matters. He received referrals from other attorneys and conducted trials of federal and state-assigned (conflict) counsel criminal cases.
1980 – 1983
Mr. Selden worked at the Law Office of Peter R. Willis, Esq. in Jersey City, New Jersey. He worked as a Law Clerk while he was still in school. After he finished his law degree, he worked as an associate attorney and a New York counsel. Mr. Selden gained extensive experience through researching, writing, and arguing pre-trial motions and appellate briefs. Later on, Mr. Willis reunited with him for a partnership.

During his law school years, Mr. Selden worked part-time as a Law Clerk at Hawkins, Delafield & Wood, 67 Wall Street, New York, and at Schnieder, Kleinick & Weitz, 11 Park Place, New York. He prepared and assisted in civil litigation in both positions, utilizing Westlaw and the then-new computerized litigation support systems.
He personally assisted Mr. Ivan Schnieder in the lengthy wrongful death trial against the City of New York that was the true story behind "Murder at the Harlem Mosque," resulting in a six-million-dollar jury award to survivors of slain police officers.

Personal Life
Mr. Selden has been a Florida resident for 33 years, and he has lived in the Volusia County area for the last 24 years. He is a certified referee in the sport of Rugby Football and is certified as both a Referee Coach and Referee Assessor for the U.S.A. Rugby and the International Rugby Board (I.R.B.).
